What Is CCaaS? Contact Center as a Service

CCaaS, short for contact center as a service, is cloud based software that runs your contact center from a vendor's data centers instead of hardware you own. You reach it over the internet and pay per agent seat each month, and the vendor handles call routing, reporting, updates, and uptime. CCaaS covers the customer-facing channels a contact center uses: inbound and outbound voice, and often chat, email, and text in one place. It differs from an on-premise contact center, where you buy and run the equipment yourself, and from UCaaS, which carries internal team communication rather than customer contact. What is CCaaS?

CCaaS is the delivery of contact center software as a cloud subscription. CCaaS and UCaaS are both cloud communication services, but they serve different audiences. CCaaS handles external, customer-facing contact: the inbound and outbound conversations a support, service, or scheduling team has with people outside the organization, along with the routing, queuing, and reporting that work needs. UCaaS, unified communications as a service, handles communication among employees: internal calling, video meetings, messaging, and presence. Put simply, CCaaS is for talking to customers and UCaaS is for talking to coworkers. The tooling reflects that. A CCaaS platform emphasizes queues, agent skills, and service-level reporting, while a UCaaS platform emphasizes meetings, chat channels, and desk-phone replacement. Some vendors sell both and integrate them, so an agent can pull a subject-matter expert from the UCaaS side into a customer call. Even then, they remain two distinct products solving two distinct problems, which is why many organizations buy one of each.
