- How Flexbone handles outpatient EHR PA
Outpatient EHRs split into multi-specialty platforms (athena, eCW, NextGen, Allscripts, Greenway, Tebra) and specialty-niche platforms (ModMed, Nextech, PatientNow, Compulink, RevolutionEHR, Crystal PM). Each has its own API maturity, documentation structure, and integration surface. Flexbone covers all of them with a unified PA workflow that adapts to what each EHR exposes.
Multi-specialty EHRs
athenahealth
athenahealth covers primary care through specialty practices with a strong web-based architecture and an API surface through athenaNet. Flexbone reads appointment data, clinical notes, and order details via API, submits PA through payer portals, and writes determinations back to the chart. Common use: multi-specialty groups running PA for cardiology, GI, orthopedic, and derm in parallel.
eClinicalWorks (eCW)
eClinicalWorks is dominant in mid-sized multi-specialty groups and independent primary care networks. eCW’s API has improved significantly, and Flexbone reads clinical data through the API or an embedded browser agent.
NextGen
NextGen serves a wide range of specialties including cardiology, orthopedic, GI, derm, and urology with specialty-specific modules. Flexbone integrates with the core NextGen platform and the specialty editions.
Greenway / Intergy
Greenway Intergy is a common multi-specialty EHR with strong position in mid-sized practices. Flexbone integrates via the Intergy API.
Allscripts / Veradigm
Allscripts (now Veradigm) covers Professional, TouchWorks, and Sunrise Ambulatory. Flexbone reads orders and clinical notes via the Veradigm API or browser agent.

Small-practice and cloud EHRs
DrChrono
DrChrono is cloud-native, popular in smaller practices and specialty clinics. Modern API.
AdvancedMD
AdvancedMD is cloud-based multi-specialty, strong in small-to-mid practices.
CareCloud
CareCloud is cloud-based with Breeze patient-engagement integration.
Tebra (Kareo + PatientPop)
Tebra combines Kareo EHR and PatientPop marketing in a small-to-mid practice stack. Flexbone integrates on the clinical and billing side for PA.
CompuGroup CGM
CGM covers MD-IT, eMDs, and Centricity legacies. Flexbone reads through CGM’s API surface.
Azalea Health
Azalea is cloud-based, used by rural health clinics and small community practices.
eMDs
eMDs (now part of CGM) continues to serve mid-sized practices. Flexbone integrates via the legacy API or browser agent.
Dermatology, plastics, and aesthetics EHRs
ModMed (EMA)
ModMed EMA is the specialty-EHR leader across dermatology, orthopedic, ophthalmology, ENT, pain management, plastic surgery, urology, and GI. Flexbone integrates with EMA across all specialty editions, reading structured clinical data that already maps cleanly to PA requirements.
Nextech
Nextech serves derm, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, and orthopedic with specialty editions plus ASC module integration.
PatientNow
PatientNow is focused on aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery with photo management, quoting, and clinical documentation.
Aesthetic Record
Aesthetic Record is cloud-native for medspa and aesthetic practice, with photo and consent workflows.
Symplast
Symplast is mobile-first plastic surgery and aesthetic EHR.
Eye care EHRs
RevolutionEHR
RevolutionEHR is cloud-native, widely used in optometry and ophthalmology.
Compulink Eye
Compulink serves ophthalmology and optometry with deep specialty workflow.
Crystal PM
Crystal PM is widely deployed in optometry practice management.
Specialty-adjacent EHRs
Additional specialty EHRs Flexbone supports: Intergy Urology (Greenway), UroChart, eUroLogic (urology), Digital Chart (GYN), gGastro and Provation (GI reporting, see AI for Provation), OMS Vision and WinOMS (oral surgery), and legacy systems like Medical Manager and Healthmatics.

Integration patterns
Flexbone’s integration with each EHR follows one of three patterns. Native API (FHIR R4, vendor-specific REST, or HL7 v2): used for athena, eCW, NextGen, Greenway, ModMed, and cloud-native systems. Embedded browser agent: used for legacy systems with limited API surface, where the agent operates the EHR UI the way staff would. Hybrid: structured data via API, unstructured documents via browser agent. See all Flexbone EHR integrations.
Payer routing from the EHR
Independent of the EHR, PA routing runs through the correct payer or delegate based on the order. A cardiology PA goes through eviCore, Carelon, or direct depending on the payer. An imaging PA goes through eviCore, NIA, Carelon, or AIM. An MSK PA goes through eviCore MSK, Carelon MSK, Optum MSK, or ASH. See PA portals and UM vendors for the delegate detail and commercial payers, BCBS plans, and Medicare and Medicaid for payer-specific rules.
How Flexbone handles outpatient EHR PA
A Flexbone deployment at a multi-specialty practice reads from the EHR, routes each PA to the correct destination based on payer and order type, submits the packet, tracks status, and writes the determination back to the EHR with a full audit trail. See PA workflow and the platform.
